The original Chinese name of the world's highest mountain

In 1721, the name Qomolangma Alin appeared in the official atlas of the Qing Empire (1644 to 1912). "Alin" is the Manchu word for "mountain." Not only did the atlas transliterate the mountain's name into Chinese for the first time, but it also provided an accurate estimate of its height, predating similar measurements by other countries by more than a century.
