The US military carried out strikes against Iran for a third consecutive night on Monday and two tankers came under Iranian fire in the Strait of Hormuz after US President Donald Trump said the US was reinstating its blockade of Iranian shipping in the Gulf and would ensure that the strategic waterway stayed open, though for a fee.
As a result of US strikes, multiple explosions were heard Monday night in the port cities of Sirik, Bandar Abbas and Jask, all in southern Iran's Hormozgan Province, Iran's state-run Press TV reported.
In retaliation, Iranian armed forces said they launched missile and drone strikes against US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman early Monday.
Iran has also carried out strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, hitting two oil tankers of the United Arab Emirates, the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, while they were transiting the southern lane of the strait in Omani territorial waters. The attack killed one crew member and injured eight others, according to UAE's Ministry of Defense.
The US-Iran conflict has flared up again as the two countries continue to exchange fire, and Trump has sent Congress formal notification that hostilities against Iran resumed on July 7, a letter his administration sees as opening a new 60-day window to use the military in the region without congressional approval.
"I directed this military action consistent with my responsibility to protect Americans and the United States' national security and foreign policy interests," Trump said in the letter, dated July 10.
On Tuesday, multiple US military bases, including those in Jordan and Bahrain, were also hit by missile attacks.
