Yuxian paper-cutting: Where knives shape a world on paper

CGTN

00:20

Yuxian paper-cutting, a form of folk art from Hebei Province with a history of over 200 years, is distinguished by one remarkable feature: it uses no scissors at all. Instead, the artisan wields a carving knife on xuan paper. The artisan holds the knife vertically, pressing down on dozens of layered sheets of paper, carving through them with a single stroke. Every inch of the paper unfolds a world of imagery with light shining through the art.
