Four buildings originally built in 1957 in Shanghai's Shimin Xincun residential community had serious safety concerns and lacked proper sanitation facilities. In October 2022, Huangpu District launched a comprehensive renovation project. It addressed safety concerns and the lack of private kitchens and bathrooms, while adding elevators, private balconies and other facilities, greatly improving living conditions. The renovated homes were handed over in March 2026, and 178 households have since moved back in.
