China on Friday rejected claims by US President Donald Trump that Beijing had interfered in US elections, saying the allegations were groundless and aimed at smearing China.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a press conference in response to Trump's comments.
Lin said China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs and has no interest in, and has never interfered in, US elections.
On the contrary, the international community clearly sees who frequently interferes in the internal affairs of other countries, conducts indiscriminate surveillance of governments, companies and ordinary people around the world, and steals large amounts of data from citizens of other countries, Lin said.
He urged the United States to reflect on its own actions, stop making unwarranted accusations against China and avoid using China as a topic in elections.
The US should do more to contribute to the healthy development of China-US relations, he said.
