A landslide struck a section of road in Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, early Friday morning, trapping several people and damaging nearby homes, local authorities said.

Rescue operations are underway. As of 11:38 a.m. Friday, eight trapped people had been rescued and taken to hospital, China Media Group reported.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched more than 100 personnel to the affected area, while 206 firefighters have also been deployed to assist with rescue efforts.
