China's meteorological authority on Friday announced the launch of a China-Thailand joint laboratory for intelligent prediction and early warning of meteorological disasters, aiming to develop a warning system that will provide sustained meteorological support for cross-border projects in power, agriculture and infrastructure.

The announcement was made at a meteorological sub-forum of the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, held in Shanghai in east China.

As the world's first bilateral cooperation lab in the field of AI-powered meteorological applications, the joint lab will focus on developing intelligent early warning technologies for disasters, including typhoons, heavy rainfall, high temperatures and droughts.

It will be based on China's MAZU intelligent meteorological early warning system, according to the China Meteorological Administration.

Research teams of the joint lab comprise more than 40 experts covering atmospheric science, artificial intelligence, power systems, agricultural meteorology and cross-border regional cooperation.
