Western narartives often accuse China of 'forced assimilation' but CCG research fellow Zoon Ahmed Khan says the reality is the opposite. China actively invests in preserving and celebrating ethnic minority languages, she notes, because diversity is the country's strength. She emphasizes that providing standard Chinese instruction is "the government's responsibility to ensure that children are not left behind" due to lack of resources. It removes barriers, she argues, so that they can be "competitive" in the job market later on.
