Flying after diving? Beware of decompression sickness

Zhang Yuying

As summer island tourism heats up, many travelers are rushing their itineraries right after diving – heading straight to the airport or high-altitude scenic areas. What they don't realize is that rushing around like this can easily trigger a hidden danger: decompression sickness (DCS).

If the nitrogen that builds up in your body during a deep dive isn't given enough time to safely escape, it can easily lead to symptoms like joint pain and skin rashes. In severe cases, it may cause breathing difficulties or even become life-threatening.

That's why it's crucial to know exactly how long you should wait before your next dive and how to plan your itinerary with safety in mind. In this video, you will hear advice from Dr. Tong Shan, chief physician at Hainan General Hospital.
