Alibaba, Moonshot launches mark new phase in China's AI race

Days after Chinese startup Moonshot AI introduced its latest large language model, Alibaba on Sunday, July 19, released a preview version of Qwen3.8-Max, the latest sign that competition among the country's AI developers is accelerating.

Alibaba said its new model, built with 2.4 trillion parameters, delivers stronger performance in coding, reasoning and AI agent tasks. The release follows Moonshot AI's launch last week of Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model designed for software engineering and autonomous task execution.

The back-to-back launches suggest China's AI race is entering a new stage. Rather than competing primarily on model size, companies are placing greater emphasis on practical capabilities such as software development, AI agents, deployment and enterprise adoption.

That shift is reflected in how both companies are positioning their latest models.

Alibaba said Qwen3.8-Max outperformed OpenAI's GPT-4.1 and Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro on several benchmarks while approaching Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.1 in coding-related evaluations, although those results have not been independently verified. The company is integrating the model into Alibaba Cloud and its AI coding tools as it expands enterprise applications.

Moonshot AI, meanwhile, highlighted Kimi K3's performance across coding, reasoning and agent benchmarks. Built on a mixture-of-experts architecture, the company said the model delivers competitive performance while reducing inference costs compared with similarly sized dense models.

The focus on software engineering reflects one of the industry's fastest-growing applications for generative AI. Beyond chatbots, frontier models are increasingly being developed to write software, use external tools, and complete multi-step tasks – capabilities widely regarded as essential for AI agents.

Developers have taken notice. Following Kimi K3's release, researchers and software engineers described its coding performance as notably strong for an open-weight model. Aaron Levie, chief executive of enterprise software company Box, wrote on X that advances in AI coding models are occurring at "an astonishing pace." Wharton professor Ethan Mollick has similarly argued that software engineering has become one of the clearest measures of practical progress in generative AI.

The launches also reveal different strategies for expanding adoption. Moonshot AI plans to make Kimi K3 available as an open-weight model, allowing developers to download and customize its trained model weights. Alibaba, by contrast, is expanding access through its cloud platform and developer tools, highlighting two approaches to attracting enterprise users.

Open-weight models provide access to trained model weights but not necessarily the training data or every component used to build the system. At the same time, analysts note that parameter count has become only one measure of competitiveness, with coding ability, reasoning performance, deployment costs, and enterprise usability carrying greater weight as frontier AI models mature.

Together, the launches point to a broader shift in China's AI industry. As release cycles shorten and model performance converges, competition is moving beyond the pursuit of larger models toward building systems that developers and businesses are more likely to adopt.
