WAIC 2026: UNESCO calls for global AI cooperation

Asia;China/Shanghai

At WAIC 2026, the conversation extends beyond technological breakthroughs to a fundamental question: how should artificial intelligence be governed globally? Prof. Shahbaz Khan, Director and Representative of the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, called for moving beyond ethical principles to concrete action. He also stressed the importance of strengthening women's leadership in AI. Khan said the newly-established World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, proposed by China, could complement the United Nations' work by reinforcing multilateral cooperation, building trust and enhancing global capacity in AI governance. He spoke with CGTN's Zhang Siran.
