WAIC explainer: What is AI for Science?

What if artificial intelligence (AI) could help scientists make discoveries never before imagined?

That's one of the themes at this year's World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai. It's called AI for Science. Simply put, it means using AI to accelerate scientific research.

And it's no longer just an idea. China's homegrown 3D scientific computer, Tianqiong, is already putting AI for Science into action. By combining AI with ultra-fast scientific computing, it helps researchers solve problems in days that once took months.

See, AI acts like a powerful research partner – analyzing massive amounts of data, identifying hidden patterns, and uncovering new possibilities that humans might otherwise overlook.

And the technology is evolving rapidly. At the conference, the Chinese Academy of Sciences unveiled ScienceOne Omni 2.0, an upgraded AI model built specifically for scientific research. Unlike general-purpose AI, it's designed to help scientists work across disciplines – from biology to materials science – with more accurate and reliable support. So why should you care?
