From strings to smart instruments: How AI is changing music creation

At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, artificial intelligence was not only being used to generate text, images and videos. It was also becoming part of a more traditional form of creative expression: music.

Among the exhibits, an AI-assisted guitar drew visitors' attention with an unusual design. Its fretboard could light up in real time, guiding players through notes and chords. Without reading sheet music or mastering complex techniques, users could follow the visual cues and interact with the instrument.

The guitar was one example of a broader shift in creative technology: AI is moving beyond generating content on screens and becoming part of the tools people use to create. While learning an instrument has traditionally required years of training, AI-powered music tools are exploring new ways to make musical expression more accessible without removing the human creativity behind it.

One example is RIFFMATE, a stringless smart guitar that rethinks how people interact with the instrument. Rather than simply adding digital features to a traditional guitar, it replaces conventional strings and frets with a touch-sensitive neck and integrates sound generation into the instrument itself, creating a different way for users to explore music.

The redesign reflects a broader effort to reshape the relationship between people and instruments. Traditional guitars require players to overcome a steep learning curve before they can express musical ideas. AI-assisted instruments are exploring new interfaces that may make musical exploration more accessible while changing how people interact with the creative process.

Beyond smart instruments, AI is also changing how people compose music. At the WAIC, another type of AI music tool demonstrated how users could upload a short humming recording and select a preferred style, allowing AI models to develop their melodies into more complete musical pieces.

Together, these tools represent different approaches to the same trend. Some AI systems help users generate compositions, while others redesign the instruments themselves. Rather than simply producing finished works, AI music technologies are increasingly being developed to support a closer collaboration between technology and human creativity.

The trend reflects a broader transformation across creative industries. Similar to AI-assisted video editing tools that can organize footage, remove unwanted sections and generate effects, AI music systems are increasingly designed to support creative workflows rather than simply replace human effort.

As AI becomes more involved in composing melodies and shaping musical ideas, questions around copyright, originality and the role of human creators continue to grow. For developers of these technologies, the goal is not to replace musicians, but to provide new ways for people to explore and express their ideas. AI may reduce technical barriers, but imagination, emotion and artistic choices remain at the heart of music creation.
