The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is taking place in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 to 29, 2026.

On the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List, inscribed properties are classified into three categories: Cultural, Natural and Mixed.

Looking back at the evolution of the World Heritage List, Europe and North America currently account for the largest share of World Heritage sites, while the Asia-Pacific region has emerged as a key driver of global growth.

Since China's first six sites were inscribed in 1987, the country has steadily expanded its World Heritage portfolio, reaching 60 sites by 2025, including 41 cultural, 15 natural and four mixed properties.
