Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with his counterparts from Brazil, Bangladesh, Brunei, India, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam on the sidelines of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila on Wednesday, calling for deeper cooperation among Global South countries to promote development and strengthen coordination to advance multilateralism.

During his meeting with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said China and Brazil have made positive progress in jointly building a community with a shared future for a more just world and a more sustainable planet. He added that the strategic partnership between the two countries has always been at the forefront internationally.

Noting Brazil is an emerging economy with global influence and a representative force of the Global South, Wang said China is pleased to see Brazil play a greater role in international affairs and appreciates Brazil's efforts to uphold justice and stand up for the rights of developing countries.

China is ready to work with Brazil to strengthen cooperation in areas such as aerospace, connectivity and artificial intelligence, providing stronger momentum for the development of both countries, Wang said. He also welcomed Brazil's participation in the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization.

Meeting with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who is also president-elect of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Wang congratulated him on his election and said China will fully support him in performing his duties and firmly uphold the status and role of the United Nations.

Wang noted that progress toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals has fallen seriously behind schedule, calling on the international community to begin planning for post-2030 development cooperation. China has put forward proposals on the direction of UN reform at a high-level meeting of the Group of Friends for Global Governance in May, Wang said, adding that China is ready to work with the UNGA president-elect to unlock the full potential of the United Nations.

On bilateral relations, Wang said that as a trustworthy good neighbor and good friend of Bangladesh, China will, as always, support the Bangladeshi government in its governance efforts. He expressed China's readiness to enhance strategic communication, deepen political mutual trust, advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and promote the building of a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future in the new era.

During talks with Prince Abdul Mateen, Brunei's minister of foreign affairs, Wang said China-Brunei relations have become a model of equality and win-win cooperation between large and small nations.  

He said China stands ready to work with Brunei to implement the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state, deepen cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, energy and artificial intelligence, advance joint maritime development and deliver more tangible outcomes from practical cooperation between the two sides.

Meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Wang said China and India should keep the well-being of humanity in mind, demonstrate responsibility as major countries, consolidate the positive momentum in bilateral relations and strengthen coordination on international and regional affairs.

Wang said China stands ready to work with India to maintain close high-level exchanges, strengthen cooperation in areas including economy and trade, media, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and properly handle sensitive issues.

He also called on the two sides to strengthen coordination and cooperation, promote the growth of the greater BRICS cooperation mechanism and better represent and safeguard the common interests of developing countries. China will continue to support India in hosting a successful BRICS summit this year, Wang added.

Wang highly applauded Papua New Guinea for closing the Taipei economic office during talks with PNG's Minister for Foreign Affairs Justin Tkatchenko, saying the move demonstrated the country's commitment to the one-China principle.

Wang said the decision would further consolidate the political foundation of the relationship between China and PNG and provide a reference for other countries in handling issues related to Taiwan institutions.

China's development of relations with Pacific island countries does not involve geopolitical games or seek a so-called sphere of influence, Wang said, adding that these countries have the right to independently choose their development partners and should not be interfered with by third parties.

Wang also met with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung, saying that as socialist countries and major developing nations, China and Vietnam should implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two parties and countries and strengthen unity and cooperation.

The two sides should continue to intensify high-level exchanges, promote practical cooperation in areas such as connectivity and artificial intelligence and jointly maintain a good situation for regional peace and development, Wang said.
