In seismology, where disaster knows no borders, international cooperation is a vital lifeline. Tom Carlo E. Simborio, a science research assistant at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, recently completed a tenure as a visiting scientist at the South China Sea Tsunami Advisory Center in Beijing, and came away convinced of the power of scientific collaboration.
Simborio sees the partnership between the Philippines and China as a reflection of shared goals. He also praised China's technological progress, particularly in ocean-bottom seismometers and advanced earthquake early warning systems – technologies the Philippines aims to adopt to strengthen its own disaster resilience. Looking ahead, he hopes to see more exchanges. In disaster preparedness, he believes, international partnerships are essential.
