Mangrove forests, often described as the "forests of the sea," are among the world's most valuable coastal ecosystems, providing a natural shield for shorelines while supporting rich biodiversity and helping combat climate change. On the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, observed annually on July 26, renewed attention is being given to global efforts to protect and restore these unique wetlands.

Growing in the transition zone between land and sea, mangroves reduce wave energy, stabilize coastlines and lessen the impacts of storm surges. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), healthy mangrove ecosystems play a vital role in safeguarding coastal communities, sustaining fisheries and providing essential ecosystem services.

Mangroves are also recognized as one of the planet's most effective "blue carbon" ecosystems. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) notes that mangroves can store significantly more carbon per unit area than many terrestrial forests, making their conservation an important nature-based solution to climate change. At the same time, these wetlands provide habitats and breeding grounds for numerous fish, birds and other wildlife, many of which are endangered.

Despite their ecological importance, mangroves continue to face pressure from coastal development, pollution and climate change. UNESCO has warned that the degradation of mangrove ecosystems threatens biodiversity, food security and the livelihoods of millions of people living in coastal regions.

In response, countries around the world are exploring more science-based and sustainable approaches to conservation. Beyond traditional tree planting, restoration projects increasingly rely on satellite monitoring, ecological assessments and blue carbon accounting to improve long-term management. Community participation has also become an essential part of conservation efforts, helping to balance ecological protection with sustainable local development.

China has made mangrove conservation a priority in recent years through large-scale restoration projects and stronger legal protection. According to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, China's mangrove area has continued to expand, while its ecological quality has steadily improved through coordinated restoration and wetland management.

Encouraging signs are emerging worldwide. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a recent study published in the journal Science found that global mangrove losses have slowed significantly, with restoration efforts and natural regeneration increasingly offsetting decades of decline. Sinikinesh Beyene Jimma, chief of UNEP's Marine and Coastal Ecosystems Unit, said the findings demonstrate that science-based conservation is delivering results, while warning that pollution and biodiversity loss remain persistent threats.

UNEP noted that successful mangrove restoration increasingly integrates scientific monitoring, local knowledge and community participation, while regional cooperation is helping scale up conservation efforts across coastal ecosystems. Experts believe that sustained investment, innovation and international collaboration will be essential to protecting mangroves and strengthening the resilience of coastal communities in the face of climate change.
