A Vietnamese-flagged vessel carrying 62 people sank in adverse weather near the Nansha Qundao on Friday. A distress flare was spotted by the Chinese rescue ship Nanhai Jiu 115, triggering a joint search-and-rescue effort. 

Forty-five Vietnamese nationals have been rescued, while operations continue to locate 17 missing crew members.
