Japanese prosecutors on Monday formally indicted a Self-Defense Forces (SDF) officer on multiple charges over his armed, forced intrusion into the Chinese embassy in Tokyo earlier this year.

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office filed formal charges against Kodai Murata, a second lieutenant of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force, on Monday. The indictment covers three major offenses: trespassing, violation of the firearms and swords control law, and intimidation.

The incident took place on March 24, when Murata scaled a wall and broke into the Chinese embassy while carrying a knife.

Calling the intrusion shocking and its nature and impact egregious, the Chinese side has lodged solemn representations and a strong protest with Japan. Beijing has also said that Tokyo's investigation and handling of the case have been moving slowly.
