In the first half of 2026, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative drugs solidified their role as the new "new three" in China's foreign trade. Customs data put industrial robot exports at 6.29 billion yuan ($929.6 million) and surgical robots at 480 million yuan, alongside sustained global leadership in weekly demand for large-scale models.
This is more than a cyclical surge. It marks a shift from exporting goods and manufacturing capacity to exporting integrated capabilities and the governance models that let them scale. Having mastered the "old three" of clothing, furniture and home appliances, and the "new three" of electric vehicles, batteries and solar, China now competes at the level of systems that fuse hardware, algorithms, data and application.
The engine is institutional. Centralized direction pairs with decentralized execution: Local governments act as investors and coordinators in what economist Jin Keyu calls the "mayor economy," aligning universities, development zones, firms and capital around frontier objectives. The claim is that China's advantage is not any single technology but the fidelity of transmission through the five nodes of ideas, institutions, instruments, infrastructure and impact, turning on two independent variables. Alignment is direction and sequence: whether the parts point at one objective and fire in a reinforcing order. Leakage is loss: how much intent, energy and capital bleed away between nodes. A system can be tightly aligned yet lose its force before impact, or transmit cleanly toward an incoherent goal. The new "new three" are what holding both at once looks like when it compounds across three sectors at once.
The move from prototype to deployment is one outcome. Robotics pioneer AgiBot's humanoids run extended factory shifts; DEEP Robotics' quadrupeds operate at a Swiss nuclear facility; Dobot Robotics' collaborative arms boast strong uptime in commercial service robots; and surgical systems are gaining clinical traction abroad.

International demand rests on real technological depth, including a lead in generative AI patents, and the clearest case is the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, whose Brain μ model works as a translator for the brain.
Huawei optimized the model for inference on its Atlas SuperPoD hardware through a full-stack AI for science system already running automated neuroscience analysis. The strategic weight sits below the model, in a data platform called BrainToken that pulls more than 12 sources across humans, monkeys and mice into one token format.
Models change quickly; data standards do not. Whoever defines the format future brain models are built on owns the substrate, the way an obscure filing system, not the algorithm, made AlphaFold, the AI system developed by Google DeepMind that predicts a protein's 3D structure from its amino acid sequence, possible. Two further forces reinforce this: complete supply chains that integrate hardware, software and services at low cost, and tight alignment with global labor shortages and demographic aging.
Challenges persist, and the same variables name them. Alignment and leakage operate at two altitudes: The institutional layer aligns the actors; the model layer aligns the technology itself. Incomplete indigenization of data governance and model alignment still lets imported assumptions surface in AI behavior, leakage at the model layer. Quality at volume, intellectual property dynamics and geopolitical friction demand the same attention.
Still, the trajectory is clear. These exports raise China's position in global value chains while diffusing productivity tools to partners, whose success makes them richer counterparts. As deployments widen and local governments accumulate frontier-tech apprenticeships, the new "new three" will test, and likely affirm, the strengths of China's innovation machine. The question for observers is less how to resist the wave than how to engage it: absorbing capability while sharpening their own institutions.
