A magnitude-6.8 earthquake hit Kyushu, Japan, at a depth of 10 kilometers on Tuesday afternoon, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) measured the quake at magnitude 7.1, saying it struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan at 4:27 p.m. local time.

The JMA had issued a tsunami advisory for the coasts of the Ariake Sea and the Yatsushiro Sea, but lifted it shortly after 6 p.m. local time.

The quake was followed by several aftershocks. Train services across the Kyushu region, including the Kyushu Shinkansen, the West Kyushu Shinkansen and local rail lines, have been suspended, according to Japanese media.

Kyodo News, citing the local fire department and a power company, reported that several people were believed to have been injured. A power outage also affected about 48,000 households in the prefecture.

No abnormalities were reported at the Sendai nuclear power plant in Kagoshima Prefecture or at the Genkai nuclear power plant in Saga Prefecture, according to Kyushu Electric Power.
