China opposed new US import restrictions on foreign-made advanced robots, including humanoid robots, saying the move unfairly targets Chinese companies under the banner of national security.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks on Wednesday at a regular press briefing after the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced restrictions on certain foreign-made advanced robotic devices.

Mao said China has consistently opposed Washington's abuse of national security concerns to suppress Chinese enterprises.

"Protectionism will not enhance US competitiveness; it will only harm the interests of American businesses and consumers," she said.

China will continue to take necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, Mao added.

The FCC has said the restrictions are aimed at addressing cybersecurity and supply chain risks. The move comes as robotics becomes an increasingly important field in the global technology race, with humanoid robots attracting investment for potential use in manufacturing, logistics, services and research.
