The first high-altitude variant of the C919 completed its maiden flight on Wednesday at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, marking a major step in the development of China's homegrown large passenger aircraft family.
The aircraft remained airborne for one hour and 59 minutes, successfully completing all planned test items, according to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
The C919 high-altitude variant is based on the standard C919 model but features targeted modifications, including a shortened fuselage and upgraded onboard systems, to meet the operational requirements of high-altitude airports.
The C919 is China's first domestically developed narrow-body jetliner designed in accordance with internationally accepted airworthiness standards and backed by independent intellectual property rights.
The standard C919 accommodates between 158 and 192 passengers and has a range of 4,075 to 5,555 kilometers.
The C919 program has achieved several major milestones over the past decade. The aircraft completed final assembly in November 2015 and made its maiden flight in May 2017. It received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China in September 2022, with the first aircraft delivered in December that year.
In May 2023, the C919 completed its first commercial flight, officially entering commercial service.
The successful maiden flight of the high-altitude variant represents another milestone in the continued expansion of the C919 family, paving the way for future operations in high-altitude regions.
