Forcing more than 360,000 people to evacuate their homes and holiday destinations across France and Spain, historic wildfires are tearing across southwestern Europe. The intense heat from the fires has even given rise to "fire clouds" (pyrocumulonimbus), a dangerous microclimate phenomenon that generates its own lightning and accelerates the spread of flames.
