A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday criticized Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's remarks that Taiwan's security policy aims to achieve deterrence through military strength, saying the comments further exposed his "Taiwan independence" stance and his intention to pursue it through military means.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to Lai's recent remarks at the commissioning ceremony of a stealth warship.

Chen said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have ignored the mainstream public opinion on the island that calls for peace, development, exchanges and cooperation.

The DPP authorities' attempt to "resist reunification by force" is simply an overestimation of their own capabilities and will only push Taiwan toward disaster, Chen said.
