France has stepped up checks along its border with Spain following the sudden mass arrival of migrants in Spain's North African territory of Ceuta. Gendarmes and customs officers inspected vehicles at the Le Boulou crossing after President Emmanuel Macron ordered stronger border controls. Italy has also announced temporary checks on non-EU travelers arriving from Spain and agreed with France to reinforce their shared border. Although the crisis remains largely contained in Ceuta, it has renewed tensions over migration and free movement within Europe's Schengen area.
