In Shanghai's South Bund Custom-Tailoring Center, international customers are pouring in for tailored suits and traditional outfits, as the district builds a reputation for Chinese aesthetics, fine craftsmanship and attentive service.

Since the start of this year, the center has seen a 30% jump in footfall, with international customers now making up 60% of the total.

The nearly 30-year-old market started as a cluster of fabric shops and tailor workshops. Today, more than 280 stores and suppliers offer the full range of custom-making services.

A hand-tailored suit or Qipao dress comes with a price tag less than a third of overseas equivalents and can be ready within 24 hours.
