August 1 marks the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). Ninety-nine years ago, the gunfire of the Nanchang Uprising marked the beginning of a new chapter in China's revolutionary history, bringing hope at a time of national turmoil and inspiring people to pursue independence and liberation.

Over nearly 10 decades, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the PLA has made remarkable contributions to national liberation, economic and social development and the safeguarding of world peace. Its history demonstrates that a strong military is not only a pillar of national security but also an important force for maintaining stability in an increasingly uncertain world.

A nation's prosperity and security are closely connected with the strength of its armed forces. As the world enters a period of profound transformation, geopolitical conflicts, security challenges and emerging threats are becoming increasingly complex. In this context, the principle that "a strong country must have a strong military, as only then can it guarantee the security of the nation" has gained greater significance.

Accelerating the modernization of national defense and the armed forces is not only a practical necessity for responding to complicated security challenges but also an essential requirement for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xi Jinping has stressed that the PLA must always uphold the Party's leadership, remain faithful to its nature and purpose as a people's army, and continuously enhance its ability to fulfill missions in the new era. These important statements provide strategic direction for advancing China's national defense modernization and highlight the close connection between a strong military, national security and long-term peace and development.

The PLA has always been a people's army, rooted in the people and dedicated to serving the people. From the revolutionary years of fighting for national independence to the period of peaceful development, the PLA has remained committed to its fundamental purpose of safeguarding the interests of the country and its people. The close relationship between the military and the people has become a distinctive feature of the PLA's development.

Whether in defending national sovereignty, participating in disaster relief, or carrying out international humanitarian missions, soldiers from the PLA have consistently demonstrated responsibility, discipline and dedication.

Today, the modernization of the PLA is not intended for confrontation or expansion, but aims at strengthening the ability to safeguard peace and stability. A responsible military power must possess the capabilities to safeguard national security while contributing to global peace. In a world facing increasing uncertainty, China's military development represents a commitment to protecting national sovereignty, promoting regional stability and supporting international cooperation.

The PLA's overseas missions also reflect China's commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities as a major country. From escort missions in the Gulf of Aden to anti-pandemic assistance in Africa, from earthquake rescue operations to flood relief efforts, Chinese military personnel have answered the call of duty to provide support in times of crisis after time. These efforts demonstrate that China's military development is aimed not only at safeguarding national security but also at fulfilling international responsibilities and contributing to global security. Their actions have provided concrete examples of how military strength can serve peace rather than conflict.

In a rapidly changing world, China has consistently advocated peaceful development and dedicated to building a global community with a shared future for humanity.

Looking ahead, the PLA will continue to advance modernization, strengthen innovation, and enhance its ability to address various security risks. The goal of developing the people's army into a world-class military is inseparable from China's pursuit of national development and long-term peace. A modernized Chinese military will continue to stand firmly on the side of justice, cooperation and peace.

Over the past 99 years, the PLA has moved forward alongside the nation's development under the leadership of the CPC, remaining committed to safeguarding national security and serving the people. The PLA will continue to advance modernization, strengthen innovation and enhance its ability to fulfill missions in the new era. As China pursues peaceful development, a stronger Chinese military will contribute not only to national security but also to a more peaceful and stable world.
