As temperatures top 35 degrees Celsius in Xuzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, some residents are finding ways to keep their home cool – without air conditioning. Using 19 degrees Celsius groundwater from an abandoned coal mine, this cooling system circulates through existing underfloor heating pipes, keeping temperatures in home below 26 degrees Celsius. The pilot project, serving nearly 100 households, cuts energy use by about 50% and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 50 metric tonnes a year.
