Data from an online box office tracker showed that China's 2026 summer box-office earnings, including presales, had surpassed 7.5 billion yuan (about $1.1 billion) as of Tuesday – the latest sign that the country's film market is sizzling with energy and momentum. This year's summer slate offers a rich lineup spanning animation, drama, sci-fi, comedy and more. Domestic films have taken the lead this year, sweeping the top seven spots on the annual chart and the top two places in the summer window.
Leading the summer season pack is the sports comedy Kung Fu Soccer, written and directed by Stephen Chow. A spiritual successor to Chow's 2001 classic Shaolin Soccer, the film presents a blend of wild imagination and gritty competition in women's football. Close behind is the animated feature All Wishes Come True!, a comedy animation inspired by a beloved Chinese folk legend. Its producers have confirmed a global rollout starting August 13.
