Golden mega-ring: China to upgrade and connect 3 highways into 27,000-km loop along borders and coast

China is set to complete a massive transport loop along its land borders and coastline during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), with three major highways – G219, G331 and G228 – stretching more than 27,000 kilometers in total, according to the Ministry of Transport.

The three highways meet at three key points – northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northeast China's Liaoning Province and south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region – creating a giant ring around the country's edges.

G331 runs about 9,200 kilometers from Dandong in Liaoning Province to Altay in Xinjiang, following much of China's northern border and passing through the grasslands of Inner Mongolia and the major agricultural, forest and energy regions of the northeast.

G219 stretches roughly 10,000 kilometers from Kanas in Xinjiang to Dongxing in Guangxi, traversing China's western border. Of the three highways, it crosses some of the country's most diverse landscapes, from deserts and the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau to the Himalayas, deep valleys, glaciers and wetlands.

G228 runs about 7,400 kilometers along China's eastern and southern coastline, linking Dandong in Liaoning and Dongxing in Guangxi. It connects dozens of coastal cities and major river systems, including the Yangtze and Pearl rivers.

The significance of the transport loop goes beyond its value as a scenic route. According to the Ministry of Transport, the loop will serve as major tourism, resource-development and border-security corridors.

It will connect hundreds of scenic and historic sites, while also linking major agricultural, mineral, energy and manufacturing hubs. The network will also connect more than 100 major ports of entry and numerous coastal ports, strengthening logistics and border security.

The project is therefore more than simply linking the three highways. As part of China's national comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network, it will facilitate the flow of resources and people and promote greater economic integration.
