More than a decade ago, when cloud computing was still a new concept to many, Wang Jian believed computing would eventually become a public service, available to everyone like water and electricity.
That belief led to the development of the "Apsara" system, China's first self-developed cloud computing operating system. Today, Wang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of Zhejiang Lab, is taking another step forward – bringing computing power into space.
At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), space computing emerged as one of the most discussed topics. Wang's "3-Body Computing Constellation" project aims to deploy 1,000 computing satellites by 2032, creating a space-based computing network capable of supporting artificial intelligence applications worldwide.

Unlike traditional satellites designed for communication, navigation or remote sensing, the new generation of computing satellites is expected to carry general-purpose AI models, allowing data to be processed directly in orbit.
"The future satellites will be general-purpose satellites," Wang said in a recent interview with China Media Group. "AI makes satellites more versatile by enabling one model to solve different kinds of problems."
For Wang, 1,000 satellites is not an arbitrary number, but "the smallest meaningful number." A constellation of such a scale would provide sufficient computing capacity, improve reliability through networking and ensure timely services around the globe.
"Only space has the potential to serve every corner of the Earth," he said, comparing future computing infrastructure to public utilities that are widely accessible and affordable.
The proposal was initially met with skepticism. When Wang introduced the concept in 2023, some questioned whether there was a real demand for space computing. Instead of avoiding criticism, Wang actively sought opinions from experts with different views.
He believes innovation requires both sound judgment and determination. "If you don't believe in what you are doing yourself, others won't follow you," he said.
Wang's career reflects China's broader pursuit of technological innovation. From developing cloud computing infrastructure to exploring space-based AI, he has remained focused on building technologies for the future.
His story also illustrates the spirit shared by many Chinese researchers – pursuing original innovation, embracing long-term challenges and remaining committed despite uncertainty.
Looking ahead, Wang believes young people will play the leading role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence. He encourages them to stay curious and persistent, noting that every generation has the opportunity to define its own era.
