A monumental installation by renowned Chinese contemporary artist Huang Yong Ping has made its latest public appearance at Taikang Art Museum in Beijing, drawing wide attention from art lovers and critics alike.

Titled Python, the immersive work stretches an impressive 30 meters in length, constructed from wooden structural components threaded together with thick hemp ropes to form the skeletal frame of a giant python. The imposing piece carries a dual visual identity: at first glance it evokes the fossilized remains of a prehistoric creature, while its continuous, sprawling form also reads as an endlessly extending architectural structure that visitors can walk alongside and through.

Originally created in 2000 for a curated exhibition in Germany, the site-specific installation Python was first presented spanning across a historic bridge over the Werra River, where its massive serpentine silhouette interacted directly with the local landscape and architectural heritage.  

The work now finds a new home in Beijing as one of 74 featured pieces in the museum's newly opened group art exhibition, Blues on White.

Curated to focus on China's contemporary creative art scene from 1996 to the present, the event brings together 74 works by 56 artists and art collectives, spanning diverse mediums including video, installation, painting, and photography. 

The exhibition weaves together the core themes of individual life experiences, intergenerational relationships, societal transformation, hometown memories and the echoes of life, reconfiguring three decades of artists'responses to real-world circumstances, bodily experiences and perceptions of time into a fully accessible contemporary art space that audiences can enter, traverse, and feel with all their senses.

Born in Fujian Province in 1954, Huang Yong Ping stands as one of the most influential trailblazers in Chinese contemporary art history. His landmark 1987 installation The History of Chinese Painting and the History of Modern (Western) Painting Washed in a Washing Machine for Two Minutes remains one of the most iconic experimental works of its era.

Blues on White is now open to the public free of charge at the Taikang Art Museum in Beijing and will run until October.
