Beijing has been named the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2029, recognizing its blend of ancient historic heritage and forward-looking sustainable urban design.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, following the recommendation from a joint committee with the International Union of Architects (UIA). Beijing was selected for its exceptional ability to combine one of the world's richest architectural legacies with modern, sustainable urban development.

Established jointly by UNESCO and UIA, the triennial designation highlights how architecture, urban planning, and heritage shape resilient and livable cities. Beijing follows Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen and Barcelona as the fourth city to be designated the World Capital of Architecture, where it will host the 2029 UIA World Congress.

UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany praised the city's historic urban fabric and successful regeneration projects, expressing confidence that Beijing's dynamic urban transformation will inspire global dialogue on the future of city design.
