Beginning of Autumn (Liqiu) falls on August 7 this year, when summer heat fades across the land of China and cool breezes rise, marking the transition from summer to autumn. It is divided into three pentads: cool winds arrive, easing the lingering heat; white dew glistens at dawn and dusk; cicadas chirp plaintively. Tang poet Bai Juyi wrote, "The hot weather comes to an end, as the cool winds start." Cool breezes enter the courtyard, squirrels frolic on the grapevines, fruits send forth their fragrance. All things shift from exuberance to abundance, and the heart finds peace as autumn draws near.
