Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture government said on Saturday that 39 people have died following the earthquake that struck the region.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Kyushu Island at 4:27 p.m. on July 28, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake caused widespread damage across the region, disrupting water and power supplies and leaving residents to cope with extreme heat and difficult conditions at evacuation centers.

Fuji News Network reported on Friday that around 10,000 households in Uki, Kumamoto Prefecture, were still without running water, with residents asking for more water to be delivered to the area. Large supplies of drinking water and other essentials are expected to arrive starting Saturday.
