As Typhoon Dolphin hits China's east coast, the 1,000-tonne tuned mass damper (TMD) on the 125th floor of the iconic Shanghai Tower swung into the action. Footage taken inside the country's tallest skyscraper shows the damper swinging about 50 centimeters in one direction.

When the tower sways under strong winds, the TMD moves in the opposite direction to counteract the building's motion, dissipating the energy generated by external forces such as wind. This helps the 632-meter skyscraper maintain stability and reduce swaying during extreme weather, effectively mitigating the impact of typhoons.
