The 2026 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) opens in Beijing with its first-ever ICBS Medal. Nine ICBS medalists, four Fields Medalists, one Turing Award winner and 80+ international award recipients have gathered to brainstorm. Robert Tarjan, the 1986 Turing laureate and American computer scientist who is attending the ICBS, calls China's basic research investment "impressive."
