A scorching heatwave has pushed water levels along Serbia's section of the Danube River to their lowest point in over a century, threatening shipping, power generation and the region's fragile ecosystem.

At Bezdan, where the river flows into Serbia, water levels have dropped 20 centimeters below the previous record low set in 1909, marking the lowest point since records began. Vast sandbars and shallow stretches have emerged across multiple sections of the river, severely reducing navigational capacity and disrupting vessel traffic.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and mobilizing resources to address the impact of the ongoing drought and extreme heat.
