Wang Xiji, a pioneering Chinese space scientist who helped lay the foundations of the country's early rocket and satellite programs, died in Beijing on August 12 at the age of 105.

Wang was one of 23 scientists awarded China's "Two Bombs, One Satellite" Meritorious Service Medal in 1999, a national honor recognizing major contributions to the country's early nuclear, missile and satellite programs.

His career spanned several of China's early space milestones.

In 1958, Wang was put in charge of a sounding rocket program despite having no previous experience in rocketry. Two years later, his team launched the T-7M experimental sounding rocket from the outskirts of Shanghai. He went on to lead the development of more sounding rockets, building China's early launch capabilities.

Wang helped China become the fifth nation to independently launch a satellite when he developed the technical plan for Long March 1, the rocket that carried China's first satellite, Dongfanghong-1, into orbit in April 1970.

He also served as chief designer of China's first recoverable satellite, which launched in November 1975 and returned to Earth with remote-sensing images. China joined the Soviet Union and the United States in mastering satellite recovery technology. The basic design Wang helped establish remained the foundation of China's recoverable satellites for decades.

His path into space technology wasn't direct. He went to the United States in 1948 to study power and fuel engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, earning a master's degree the following year. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he gave up plans to pursue a doctorate and returned to China in 1950.

His later work extended into crewed spaceflight, small satellites, and long-term space development. Even in his later years, Wang remained involved in discussions on China's lunar exploration and space station programs.

Reflecting on his decades in the field, Wang once described the role he hoped to play simply: "I am willing to be a paving stone to space."
