China launched pilot projects for 10-gigabit optical networks in 2025 as part of efforts to advance next-generation communications infrastructure. A chemical plant in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, one of the pilot sites, has integrated the high-speed network with AI algorithms to develop an intelligent alarm system. The system can issue warnings within milliseconds while simultaneously streaming real-time 8K high-definition video.
Beyond 10-gigabit optical networks, China is upgrading 5G base stations to 5G-Advanced (5G-A) and advancing technological development toward 6G.
China is also developing satellite internet infrastructure, with batches of satellites being launched to build the Guowang and Qianfan low-Earth-orbit (LEO) internet constellations.
