China's summer box-office revenue has surpassed 9.5 billion yuan ($1.33 billion), driven by a strong lineup of local releases, lower ticket prices and steady audience demand. According to industry data, daily cinema ticketing sales in China have exceeded 100 million yuan ($14 million) for 36 consecutive days, pushing the country's total box-office revenue for 2026 past 25.2 billion yuan ($3.53 billion).

Domestic films have taken center stage during the peak summer viewing period. Once Upon a Time in the Middle East, a drama focusing on a Chinese chef navigating conflict in the region, has grossed over 590 million yuan ($82.6 million) since opening on August 11, earning a 9.8 rating on major ticketing platforms. Other notable domestic releases include the animated romance To Your Island, the documentary Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains, and the upcoming animated comedy Demon Agent.

Foreign releases and restored classics have also added momentum. Christopher Nolan's latest film, The Odyssey, has generated more than 170 million yuan ($23.8 million) since its debut on August 14, alongside thrillers like The End of Oak Street and a 4K restoration of The Shawshank Redemption.

The box-office surge coincides with government initiatives aimed at lowering cinema costs and expanding access. The average ticket price during this year's summer season dropped by 3.2 percent year-on-year to 36.3 yuan ($5.08), marking a five-year low and encouraging higher audience turnout.

Physical cinema expansion and regional integration have further boosted consumer spending. With 363 new venues and 2,215 screens added across China by late July, local governments have coupled film screenings with wider tourism through voucher programs – such as Hainan's 5 million yuan ($700,000) scheme – and retail incentives, driving total output across the film supply chain past 390 billion yuan ($54.6 billion).
