"Macao is a shining pearl on the coast of the South China Sea and a treasured place of the great motherland," said Chinese President Xi Jinping.

On December 20, 1999, China resumed exercising sovereignty over Macao and established the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR). Under One Country, Two Systems, the socialist system is not practiced in Macao. It is allowed to retain its capitalist system and way of life and is given a high degree of autonomy.
