China's robotics leap: From innovation to global productivity

The World Robot Conference 2026 (WRC) opens in Beijing from August 19 to 23. Over 2,000 exhibits, including upwards of 150 world premieres, will be displayed. These figures are more than a snapshot of a booming global robotics sector; they are also a clear window into the innovative vitality and applied strength of China's robotics industry as well.

A full-spectrum leap in technology, supply chains and applications

Humanoid robot capability is being restructured at a fast pace in recent years. Motion control, once a core barrier to entry, has rapidly shifted from a competitive moat to an industry baseline, echoing photovoltaics and electric vehicles, where first-mover leads typically last only several years before challengers close the gap.

The industry's center of gravity has been shifting downward: from brand-building among integrators, to component suppliers investing in mass-production quality and cost control, to an emerging moat at the "brain" chip and software-platform level. China's progress now hinges not on single breakthroughs but on coordinated advances across chips, computing power, data and real-world system integration.

In computing infrastructure, competition is moving from "building chips" to "building systems." From Huawei's Atlas 950 SuperPoD to the fully domestic "Sugon 8000" cluster with 100,000 accelerator cards, China is breaking single-machine performance bottlenecks through software-hardware co-designed supercomputing, powering robots' "embodied brains."

With respect to industrial ecosystems – chips, computing power, algorithms, components and cloud – rather than any single model, China has built a formidable supply chain in precision reducers, servo systems and other core components, backed by rigorous quality control, fast research and development and cost advantages.

From application and commercialization perspective, China follows an "application-driven, scenario-energized" path. Guided by the "AI Plus" initiative, China treats manufacturing as embodied intelligence's proving ground, turning artificial intelligence(AI) into infrastructure like water and electricity – feeding industrial scenarios back into model training, working in reverse from application toward physical artificial general intelligence.

From exporting products to empower global manufacturing

Technology realizes its ultimate value only when it becomes broadly usable productive capacity. In the past, Chinese manufacturing helped drive the world's low-carbon transition through green industries. Looking ahead, China is accelerating its transformation into "the factory that supplies the world's factories" – not only exporting high-quality finished robots globally, but also supplying the world's manufacturing sector with premium components and high-end equipment.

China holds significant capacity in key robotic components when cost is the barrier to mass production. The race is shifting from intelligence to cost, reliability, standardization, and scale as well.

Furthermore, what the robotics industry needs is not mutually isolated "technology islands," but an openand shared network of innovation. Countries and regions can each contribute their strengths – in basic research, core components, software algorithms, application scenarios and standard-setting – competing while cooperating and innovating while collaborating, so that technological achievements are converted more quickly into productive capacity that benefits the world.

Open cooperation as the foundation for shared governance

Deeper openness is reflected in the resonance between rule-making and global governance. With embodied intelligence at a critical window for commercialization, unified international standards are central to connecting global markets. This year's WRC has secured support from nearly 30 international organizations, with overseas guests making up 30% of main-forum speakers, including experts from United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the International Federation of Robotics and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, who will assess industry trends and discuss standards frameworks for embodied intelligence and AI governance.  

China also has consistently engaged in global governance with an open stance: from the full implementation of its measures for labeling AI-generated and synthetic content, to the official release of the "Humanoid Robot and Embodied Intelligence Standards System (2026 Edition)" in February 2026, to the World AI Cooperation Organization agreement signed by multiple countries on July 26, 2026. While strengthening regulation across AI's full lifecycle, China is actively advancing a path of innovation for the global AI and robotics industries defined by human-machine symbiosis and inclusive, broadly shared benefit.

Robots now sit at the convergence of AI, advanced manufacturing, new materials, sensing and data technologies, reshaping production and daily life. Facing this transformation, China has continued to strengthen independent innovation and its industrial chain while using open cooperation to drive technical exchange, standards development and application collaboration.

The message delivered from WRC 2026 is clear: The next stage of robotics will depend not only on technological breakthroughs, but also on integrating computing power, models, data and real-world scenarios. Moreover, through open cooperation, innovation will move industry development beyond the laboratory and onto the production line, while delivering benefits that are safer, more reliable and more inclusive for people on our shared blue planet.
