The United States is the only Western country that still carries out executions – and one state is responsible for more than half of them. 

Florida executed its 13th prisoner this week. Last year the state reached 19, its highest since 1976. In July it put two men to death in a single day, something no US state had done in nearly a decade. Two more executions are scheduled for September.
