China has achieved a major engineering breakthrough in high-altitude wind power, with the domestically developed S4000 airborne wind power system recently completing a full-process flight test at a test base in northwest China.
The successful test marks China's stratospheric high-altitude wind power technology moving from technological iteration toward engineering application.
The trial covered the entire operational process, including ascent, station-keeping, power generation testing and stable recovery. All performance targets were met, demonstrating the system's reliability in complex and extreme high-altitude environments.
An upgraded version of the S2000 model, the S4000 features a new configuration and improved overall performance. It can reach a maximum operating altitude of 4,000 meters and is designed for deployment across most regions of China.
The system can also be directly integrated with mainstream power grids and has a designed service life of up to 20 years.
The successful test of the S4000 system fills a critical gap in the engineering application of China's high-altitude wind power technology, enhancing the country's ability to supply clean energy in high-altitude areas and marking another step forward in the development of frontier new energy technologies.
