End of Heat (Chushu) falls on August 23 this year. Summer heat fades across China, giving way to autumn as hints of the season fill the air. It is divided into three pentads: eagles begin hunting more birds, nature takes on a solemn air and grains ripen for harvest. Southern Song Dynasty poet Su Jiong wrote, "Scarcely three days since summer's heat ceased, the fresh chill arrives, priceless as gold." Autumn winds rise. Golden pheasants wander among rocks and crape-myrtle blossoms, foraging at ease. The autumn air is crisp and tranquil, and all things are at peace.
