Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on August 22, following failed talks.

Carney accused Washington of wielding economic integration "as a weapon" against allies, adding that the US "would put tariffs on its closest partners."

In a pointed remark, he said: "Sometimes its signature was written in pencil."

Ottawa has questioned the reliability of US commitments. Carney said the decades-long process of deepening economic integration between Canada and the US was "over," marking a sharp shift in bilateral relations.
