Explainer: Why Chang'e-7 can't simply launch a few days later

China's Chang'e-7 lunar mission will not launch during its planned window this year, after a comprehensive assessment found that the mission does not yet meet launch requirements, the China Manned Space Agency announced on Sunday.

The decision was made under the principle of ensuring safety and reliability, rather than rushing a mission that is designed to operate under highly specific conditions.

So what exactly is a launch window? And why can't Chang'e-7 simply wait a few days and try again?

A launch window is a period during which a spacecraft can be launched to meet the required orbital, celestial, tracking and other mission conditions. For some missions, such as satellites heading to relatively low Earth orbit, the window can be relatively flexible. If a launch is postponed, another opportunity may come days later.

But missions traveling far beyond Earth face much tighter constraints.

Chang'e-7 is headed for the moon's south pole, where it will search for evidence of water ice. The region is one of the most unusual environments on the moon.

Because the moon's rotational axis has only a very small tilt, sunlight near the lunar south pole skims close to the horizon. Some elevated areas receive sunlight for more than 80% of the year, creating so-called areas of near-perpetual illumination. At the same time, nearby impact craters can remain in permanent shadow, with temperatures dropping to around minus 230 degrees Celsius. Water ice may be preserved in these extremely cold regions.

That combination makes the south pole scientifically valuable – but also makes the mission highly dependent on timing.

Chang'e-7 will rely primarily on solar power, meaning it must arrive at the right time to take advantage of favorable lighting conditions. The spacecraft needs to reach and land in the target area before a high-quality period of continuous sunlight begins.

Preliminary estimates suggest that the total period each year offering particularly favorable lighting conditions for stable exploration may be only around 100 days. These opportunities do not occur every month, and they cannot necessarily be recovered simply by launching a few days later.

If the mission misses the optimal period, Chang'e-7 could arrive when sunlight at the lunar south pole is already weakening. That could affect power supply and navigation and significantly shorten – or even eliminate – the available window for surface exploration.

That's why the official statement says Chang'e-7 cannot be launched during its planned window this year, rather than simply saying that the launch has been delayed by a few days.

For a mission to one of the moon's most challenging environments, timing is not just about when the rocket leaves Earth. It is about making sure the spacecraft arrives at the moon at exactly the right moment.
