China Media Group launches AI ecosystem and large model initiatives

China Media Group (CMG) on Tuesday launched two artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives aimed at accelerating the digital and intelligent transformation of its content production and distribution, joining forces with China's three major telecom operators and leading technology companies.

At a symposium in Beijing, CMG unveiled an AI media ecosystem co-building initiative and a large model co-building initiative. The initiatives are designed to pool computing power, network infrastructure, industry resources and model research capabilities to build a media-specific AI system.

Shen Haixiong, head of CMG, said the broadcaster is moving beyond its traditional role as a content producer. "CMG will also be an ecosystem builder and a standard setter," Shen said, adding that CMG holds large volumes of exclusive, high-quality media data and extensive production and broadcasting scenarios, providing a strong foundation for large-scale AI applications.

The AI ecosystem initiative brings together China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, Huawei, Alibaba Cloud, and Inspur Group. Cooperation will focus on computing infrastructure, network transmission and industrial coordination to support the deployment of AI across media production and delivery.

The large model initiative brings together AI research institutions and companies to develop a large model system for audiovisual media. CMG said the system will support AI-assisted workflows across planning, gathering, editing, review and distribution, with an emphasis on full-media ultra-high-definition content, multimodal generation and intelligent production tools.

Participating companies said they would contribute capabilities ranging from cloud computing and high-performance chips to security systems and intelligent agents.
